The Journey

Written by Ian Taylor    Thursday, 08 March 2007

We begin the journey the first time we play poker. When we sit down in a casino, online, or (more often than not) in a home game. We start as complete beginners, but from there we develop as players: improving our play, discipline and attitude. Hopefully, our play will continue to improve and we will eventually become winning players and then move on to beat bigger and bigger games.

The Luckiest Player in Poker: The Antithesis of a Bad-Beat Story

Written by Matthew Hilger    Friday, 22 December 2006

Every month I divulge some of the strategies that I have learned about this game. This month, I would like to share a secret that most people don't know: I am the luckiest player in poker.

It's true. I can't believe how often I get lucky at the poker table. Just recently I was playing in a tournament against other members of my website, www.InternetTexasHoldem.com. The flop came Jh10h8c. A player bet about two-thirds of the pot and I moved all in with the KhQc. I was rather short-stacked and needed to make a move. The button called, and I instantly knew that I was in trouble. He showed the Ah9h. Not only did he have the best hand, but he also had the best draw. The turn was a 7, giving him a straight. But a 9 hit the river and I had the nuts. I have such great luck! I took that pot and went on to win the tournament.

Outs Versus 'Douts': A new way of describing your draws

Written by Matthew Hilger    Tuesday, 28 November 2006

The term "out" is one of those words that create a lot of confusion among poker players. And, in many cases, players use a definition that will lead to incorrect decisions. One commonly used definition is that an out is a card that improves one's hand. For example, you might hear a player say that he has nine outs with a flush draw. This is a popular and practical definition - as one can easily count how many cards will improve his hand to a better one. This definition always works well in describing to beginning players the various possibilities in improving their hand. Although practical, this definition tends to give many players false impressions with respect to the strength of their draw.

Your Stack and the Time Clock

Written by Matthew Hilger    Tuesday, 29 August 2006

An interesting scenario arose for me in the $1,500 pot-limit hold'em event at the World Series of Poker. I took down 14th place and a $21,000 payday, but I won't bore you with how the ladies (pocket queens) let me down a couple of times toward the end. This column focuses on a key stage in the tournament when the time clock played an important role in determining my strategy.

Determining How Much to Bet

Written by Matthew Hilger    Wednesday, 17 May 2006

There are always two key decisions you must make when taking the initiative in no-limit hold’em while playing a hand. Are you going to play, and if so, how much do you want to bet? The amount of your bet is always very important. If you bet too little with a good hand, you could be inviting your opponent to hit a long shot that might cost you your entire stack. If you bet too much, you might find yourself in a situation in which you are winning only small pots and losing large pots. A key part of the decision in determining how much to bet depends on the pot odds and implied pot odds.

Guilty Conscience

Written by Ian Taylor    Friday, 24 March 2006 Back in the late 90’s, before he became sidetracked with writing songs about Michael Jackson, George Bush and vomit, Eminem released a catchy song entitled ‘Guilty Conscience’. It was a song about the two voices that talk to you, one ‘bad voice’ (played by Eminem) representing temptation to commit crime or do what is wrong and one ‘good voice’ (played by Dr Dre) representing logic, reason and morality. It told a story of various scenarios where you might hear the two voices, sometimes one winning and sometimes the other. Read more...

Raising Draws for Value

Written by Matthew Hilger    Sunday, 05 March 2006

I read a lot of hand examples and answer a lot of questions in the forum at my website, and there are some common errors that I consistently see. Beginning players, and even some players with a decent amount of experience, have misconceptions on when they should raise and when they should call. In general, a player should raise when he has the best hand. Most players understand this. What they don’t understand is how to define the best hand.

My Poker Career (In Just 5 Hands)

Written by Tony Pillinger    Sunday, 26 February 2006 In a break from talking tactics or strategy, I am going to write about the 5 hands that have marked my poker progression from a novice at the end of 2002 to the player I am today. The theme from this article is taken from my favourite poker post in 2005, a post written by Mike l. at 2+2 where he talks about his “5 ‘life changing’ sort of hands”. Although I would not describe any of the below hands as “life changing”, they definitely stand out as highlighting key moments in my development as a player.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions Part II

Written by Tony Pillinger    Saturday, 28 January 2006 In last month’s article I looked at some of the important decisions you should be making before a single card is dealt. This month I am going to look at some less obvious decisions, some important and some possibly not so, to see how they might impact on your win rate. Read more...

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Written by Tony Pillinger    Saturday, 24 December 2005 Some of the most important decisions you will make during a session are made at the outset, before a single card is dealt to you. In this month’s article I am going to look at those decisions and the thought processes you should go through when making them. Read more...

The Biggest Mistake in Shorthanded Games

Written by Matthew Hilger    Friday, 16 December 2005 My book, Internet Texas Hold’em, focuses on limit hold’em at a full table of nine or ten players. I learned this game by playing in full ring games, but my real passion is playing in shorthanded games. I don’t play nearly as much online as I once did, but when I do, I play mostly shorthanded. Shorthanded play has more action, more hands, more strategy, more bluffing, and is simply more fun. It also is a lot more profitable. Read more...

One Week as a Pro

Written by Ian Taylor    Thursday, 08 December 2005

The possibility of becoming a professional poker player is an alluring one for most players. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to sit at home playing poker all day? My personal situation is such that the idea is especially appealing. I have a decent job, but nothing I would be reluctant to quit. I have no dependants, a very supportive family and a partner who earns enough to get me through the tough months if things went badly wrong.

Zoom In Zoom Out

Written by Paul Ferner    Friday, 04 November 2005  I recently tried out that Google earth thing. In case you don’t know what it is, it’s a piece of software that you can download that lets you look at any place on earth from any height using satellite images. Its actually really impressive and lots of fun. I found it incredible to look at England from space then zooming in bit by bit… I was finally looking at a close up image of my street. It reminded me why I like statistics so much. Perspective. Statistics allows us to zoom in and zoom out on things. I’ll show you what I mean by looking at limit holdem earn rates. Read more...

What Makes a Bad Poker Player?

Contributed by Ian Taylor    Sunday, 07 August 2005

In college I played on the football team. Now this isn’t exactly a bragging right in England where football is not nearly as big as it is over in the US , but nevertheless I loved the game and was fairly good at it. There was one guy on the team who struggled. He trained hard, listened to the coaches and put in a lot of effort but he just wasn’t a football player. He was undersized, lacked coordination and didn’t have an aggressive bone in his body.
