Leading poker media outlets took notice of the exciting weekly developments in the ITH IPOY last year.
In fact, ALL IN magazine will feature a recap of ITH's 2006 IPOY race - including a special tribute to phat_cat - in an upcoming publication!
|
Written by Ryan Peck Tuesday, 23 January 2007
Beginning Jan. 1, 2006, InternetTexasHoldem.com sought to capture the results of the year’s most premiere online multi-table tournaments in an effort to crown the king of Internet poker for the year 2006. ITH began capturing weekly data from established poker rooms on the web. Using a unique, objective scoring system, the race for the top online poker player started to heat up. Word continued to spread, and eventually the ITH Internet Player of the Year race featured more than 65,000 registered players from all across the world!
But at the end of the year, one player stood out above all the rest as ITH’ s inaugural Internet Player of the Year. After registering in ITH’s system, Shawn “phat_cat” Luman immediately found himself near the top of the standings. Shortly thereafter, following a string of impressive online finishes, Luman ascended to the top of the rankings and never looked back. He fended off a furious rally from Tmay420 to become the first ever Internet Player of the Year for ITH.
Congrats to Shawn "phat_cat" Luman for being named the first ever Internet Poker Player of the Year. Please be on the lookout for mention of ITH and the thrilling 2006 IPOY race in the February edition of ALL IN magazine!" and look to the newly launched http://InternetPokerRankings.com for information on the 2007 rankings."

Two Tables Are Better Than One |
| Written by Barry Carter aka Dave Shoelace |
| Thursday, 11 January 2007 |
When I first started playing online, despite modest success playing live, I was a break-even player at best. Then I discovered a lovely little $8 sit-and-go on Pacific Poker. It was a 20-person SNG on two tables. You only got 800 chips to start with, and in no time at all you were down to the second table. In fact, it wasn't uncommon for two or three players to get busted before your first big blind was taken from you. I found that I could often get to a paid spot without having to play many hands at all. You just let the maniacs take care of each other and all of a sudden you were playing for 20 buy-ins worth of prizes. This SNG is what catapulted my profits and made me truly
believe I could actually make money playing poker.

The recent decision by Neteller to cease facilitating transactions with online gambling sites for its US customers has become the largest effect to date of the UIGEA bill signed into law on October 13th
, 2006. Until last week, Neteller was the most universal method for funding online poker and gambling accounts, accepted by virtually every reputable site and accessible to almost any players at those sites throughout the world (with notable exception of Marylanders in the US). Neteller's rapid decision, on the heels of arrests in the US of two founders of the company, was followed in quick succession by the loss of other smaller players in the US including Central Coin and InstaDebit, as well as Click2Pay which is no longer accepting US customers (though existing ones can still use the service). Additionally, many sites no longer offer direct debit/credit of US bank
accounts, further reducing the convenient options for managing an online bankroll.
What does this mean for all the players who have money online in various poker sites, sports books, and with payment processors like Neteller? For starters, it's probably not a time to panic, sites like Neteller and Poker Stars are quite reputable, and segregate customer deposits from operating revenues, so as difficult as it may be to access funds at these sites in the short run, it's perfectly reasonable to expect to be able to get the money in the long run, either through slower methods like paper checks, or through other payment processors that are, or may become, available. Neteller is also encouraging members with a need to more quickly access their online balances to
withdraw through their Neteller ATM card, though there are some fees and limitations involved, as noted here
. That said, now would certainly be a good time to make a prudent assessment of your bankroll and your needs to have ready availability of some or all of it while deciding how best to manage your money online. In my opinion, the best way for a US based poker player to proceed would probably be to get a working bankroll into the sites which seem the most failsafe, in the event that deposit methods are further curtailed. This should allow US players to continue to play at the sites like Poker Stars, Full-Tilt Poker, Absolute Poker and others which seem to be in no hurry to prohibit US players from playing, even if methods of depositing money into these sites becomes
more difficult in the future. Each player will, of course, have to determine how much risk is acceptable, especially when dealing with the larger sums that a regular online pro will need to maintain in order to minimize normal bankroll risk.
So, what are the options for funding accounts online now? For an up-to-date list of the most popular options and the sites which accept them, you can check out this link for an online spreadsheet which we will keep updating as things progress. The most widely accepted ewallet at this point would appear to be ePassporte
which is the method of funding currently recommended by Poker Stars, and which is also available at Ultimate Bet, Absolute, and Full Tilt. By comparison to Neteller it has the disadvantage of some significant fees and slower transfer of cash from a bank account to an ePassporte account, but it does have the advantage of offering a virtual Visa card for online shopping directly from your balance as well as a physical Visa card option (for an additional fee) which allows you to spend from your online balance anywhere Visa is accepted. Also, once funded, transferring funds to and from poker sites online is fee free (with the exception of $5 annual account fee for the
the ePassporte account itself), which does mean that for those players who don't need to constantly move money online from regular accounts the fees will probably be a relatively minor nuisance. A complete listing of ePassporte's fees can be found here. One ITHer's account of signing up for an ePassporte account can be found in this forum post.
For as long as ePassporte or an equivalent option remains available (new ones such as ATMonline, NUcharge and eWalletXpress have already popped up), cashing out is also probably best handled via an eWallet, but for those sites where ePassporte isn't available, or in the event of further restrictions, there are some other alternatives. For example, it is possible to fund most sites via Western Union transfers, and in many cases to cash out via this method as well. Unfortunately, this requires person-to-person transfers via Western Union which can be a bit unsettling given the potential amounts involved and the fees can be significant as well. For now, Bodog is
picking up the fees for one cashout per week, as noted here, and other sites may institute similar setups if other methods of funding become more difficult. Similarly, most sites will fund an account via a mailed cashier's check or money order and will cash out via a paper check. These methods are likely to remain available for the foreseeable future, as they aren't covered by the UIGEA, but they are obviously not as transparent as online transactions, and do potentially involve the risk/hassle of payments lost in the mail. We will continue to monitor the options available and update here and on the ITH forums
with any new information.
Finally, it is worth noting that the online gambling customers in the US are a large portion of the market for these sites, and despite the dearth of options currently available to US players to fund these accounts it is reasonable to expect that the sites that continue to do business in the US will provide alternatives. Likewise, as with any new business, it is essential that those customers do appropriate due diligence and be wary of potential scams and fly-by-night operations. Neteller's withdrawal from the US certainly makes this landscape more uncertain, but with the resources available here and elsewhere we hope to be able to provide you with enough good information to
make intelligent decisions about how to continue with your online poker hobby/profession.
In the interests of maximizing the information available to all players, here are a few more useful links about the legal issues surrounding online gaming, as well as specific references about some of the current funding alternatives.
At ITH, you can find up-to-date information on legal issues in the Poker Legal Issues forum, and a similar resource can be found at 2+2's Poker Legislation forum.
For general information about account funding alternatives there's this ITH thread as well as the previously mentioned online spreadsheet. There are also specific threads about ATMonline and ePassporte. The General forum and Poker Bonus Chasing forum at ITH are where any new information will first appear when we get it. 2+2's Internet Gambling forum also has a number of threads about specific poker rooms/payment processors.
CompatiblePoker.com has updated information on many of these issues as well as a list of US-friendly poker sites here, and Gambling911 offers coverage of breaking news as well. |

This is the ninth article in a series called Top 10 Mistakes of Online Players.
The mistakes are not given in any particular order. Most of the mistakes apply to live play also although two or three of them are more applicable to online play. So far we have discussed the following mistakes:
#1: Playing Too Many Starting Hands #2: Drawing to Outs That Won’t Help You Win #3: Miscalculating Odds with Two Cards to Come #4: Calling Raises Too Often on the Turn #5: Automatically Betting or Raising the River When They Think They Have the Best Hand #6 Playing at Limits Too High in Relation to Their Bankroll #7 Not Paying Attention #8 Bluffing Too Much
This leads us into our next common mistake…
Mistake #9: Trying to Get Back to Even
Most poker players have short-term goals. They sit down at the table and they want to win money…now! Many players suffer having to close a session with a big loss. It kills them! How often have you stayed up late at night trying to get back to even? Do you always have in the back of your mind where you stand in a given session?
Unfortunately this type of mindset will hinder quality play. Trying to get back to even is a losing proposition. This is especially true when you are sleepy. You’ll start to play a few more hands than normal hoping to hit that big hand. On the flop you might hold a weak draw but decide to go for it in hopes of hitting that one pot to get you back to even. You don’t hit on the flop so you decide, “what the heck, one more bet won’t hurt me”, and you call the turn. You end up chasing in situations that have a negative expectation. You know better, BUT you just want to go to bed with a clean slate! In many cases you just keep digging yourself a bigger hole.
For all of those who can relate to the above I have one simple piece of advise…you can always get back to even tomorrow or the day after. Poker is one long continuous game which never ends. Thinking in terms of sessions or even weeks will throw many players into a bad mood a lot of the time. To approach this game with the right mindset you must think of your results with a long-term perspective. I always like to look at my results in terms of months.

| Ultimate Bet – A Stalwart for Americans
January 23rd, 2007
Ultimate Bet remains one of the most versatile places to play poker of the internet. Founded in 2000, Ultimate Bet is an old-timer compared to a lot of other poker sites available. Let me dig a little deeper and we can explore some of Ultimate Bet’s secrets.
The changing landscape. Ultimate Bet is still here for American players. While some of the giants have vacated the American landscape, like Party, OnGame and the Cryptologic sites, Ultimate Bet has remained, providing 24/7 poker play in cash, tournament and SnG venues. While the UIGEA may have scared a number of sites and, indeed, a number of cashiering providers, Ultimate Bet has remain true to it’s convictions of providing a haven for the downtrodden American player. This will not be forgotten by many an American should the future provide us with a reprieve or repeal from the stupidity of the UIGEA.
Software. Ultimate Bet’s software is continually improving. Although they haven’t caught up with the recent changes in table re-sizing, Ultimate Bet was one of the first sites to offer mini-mode screen play which enhanced multi-tabling back in the day when screen resolutions were either too expensive or non-existent. I will agree that true table-resizing may well need to be in Ultimate Bet’s future, but for the interim, a 1600x1200 screen resolution will easily hold 4 Ultimate Bet tables. Where could Ultimate Bet improve its software? Try this:
- A statistical tool that won’t disappear as table changes due to MTT table consolidation or player’s choice.
- The aforementioned table resizing tool.
- Abolishing the recent 100 hands maximum hand history reload. Players have to click off the hand history box and re-instate it. I understand this is to keep datamining to a minimum, but my suggestion to them was rather simple. Get rid of this 100 hand feature and disallow players from capturing hand histories unless they are dealt a hand. Rather simple.

Bonuses. This is where Ultimate Bet outshines most of the competition. I’ll list Ultimate Bet’s bonus attributes:
- The bonus simply never expires. Other sites like Poker Stars used to do this, but now even their bonuses expire. Other sites never had this feature.
- The bonuses are always stackable. Got a reload? Add it to the total. As of this writing I have $2700+ there and I just keep adding and playing off the bonus.
- The reloads are always good. I have never seen anything under 20% up to $100, and recently they have been even better than this, including the current 100% up to $650 reload which end at 11:59PM EST on Friday, 26th of January.
- Initial deposit is huge. 100% up to $650.
- They clear at all limits. Although clearance rates are not spectacular compared to other sites like Party and their wonderful 5 raked hands per bonus dollar initial deposit bonus, they clear up to $2/$4 limit at a rate of almost 1BB/100 hands.
- You clear this bonus as you play. No lump sum, no increments, as you play. If you clear 20 Ultimate Points [which is worth $2 in bonus] in a session and leave the table, that $2 is moved from your pending bonus account straight into your account. This is huge for bankroll development. If you are already a 2BB/100 player, how does an extra 1BB/100 strike you?
Tournaments. Ultimate Bet has almost everything for everyone. Big buy-in weekly or daily MTTs. The Ultimate Bet Online Championships. Qualifiers and Satellites to the WSOP and other WPT/EPT events. Rebuy MTTs, Bounty tournaments, freerolls and a myriad of SnGs from heads-up contests to mammoth 20-table slugfests. They are all available at varying buy-ins and are running 24/7. A little late for your favorite tournament? Put you name on the alternates list. Tired of opening up an SnG that says 4 seats are still available only to find it full? Ultimate Bet has SnG waiting lists that you put your name on. When it fills, it starts a new one. Never have to worry about jumping on an
SnG again.
I love playing at Ultimate Bet. There is so much to offer and that beautiful non-expiring bonus keeps me coming back for more. Hope to see you at the tables.
