Poker Time: MicroGaming Giant

There is a new force on the MicroGaming landscape. I can’t say I am ultimately thrilled by the conglomeration of sites rendered unto Poker Time, but I must acknowledge that I have expected moves like this for quite some time. I hear you! Piscivorous, get to the point!
MicroGaming poker site has become a major player at the former Prima Poker Network. The following sites have merged their poker assets with Poker Time and are now turning most of their attention to their casino operations:

  • 7 Sultans
  • River Belle
  • Royal Vegas
  • The Gaming Club
  • Trident Poker

These are the five I am aware of. If anyone knows of others, please PM me at ITH, so I can keep on top of the situation.

I had accounts at both Royal Vegas and The Gaming Clubs for quite some time. I withdrew my funds from both in the unsure aftermath of the UIGEA. Both sites had mediocre initial deposit bonuses and lucrative, if infrequent, reload bonuses. Players at MicroGaming are middle of the road. You’ll find good players and awful players with aggression more the norm than not, and quite a few very loose donators.

What kind of impact does the merge to Poker Time have on playing at MicroGaming for casual and bonus chasers?

Promotions.

The larger combined/controlled player base will allow Poker Time to pursue more land-based tournaments both for the WPT and EPT. Their recent launch have exposed new players to the Foxwood WPT event in early March.

bonus_120

I expect reloads to start. Maybe not on the scale of some of the big powerhouses, but more like the lucrative Royal Vegas and The Gaming Club targeted bonuses of the past.

  • More guaranteed tournaments.
  • Online store merchandising
  • Bonuses.

Bonuses have changed substantially. Instead of the 5x or 10x non-expiring bonuses, Poker Time has a much different bonus that isn’t quite as lucrative.

  • Players gain points for every hand raked at $0.25 or higher.
  • Players need 7 points for each $1 in bonus to be earned.
  • Dependent on limit/buy-in, players may need to earn substantially more raked hands than in the past.

A player of $1/$2 limit will get only 0.4 points per raked hand, meaning he needs to rake slightly less than 18 hands to get $1 in bonus money. That makes this a 18x bonus at this limit. Someone playing $5/$10 will get 1 full point and it will be a 7x bonus. Someone playing NL50 will need to accrue 46 raked hands for $1 in bonus money.

In the end it comes down to whether the player is in it for the bonus or the promotions and added security of such a large conglomerate within the MicroGaming framework. Anyone who hasn’t already changed over their accounts will have all of their monies at each of the sites merged into one Poker Time account.

Doyle’s Room Dropped from 2007 IPOY

Written by Ryan Peck
Thursday, 28 February 2007

IPR has learned that Doyle’s Room will no longer accept United States players after Wednesday, Feb. 28, when the poker site will transition to Playtech software (iPoker). As such, the final Doyle’s Room tournament to be tracked by IPR as a part of its 2007 Internet Player of the Year Criteria was the Doyle’s Room 100K Guaranteed from Sunday, Feb. 25. No Doyle’s Room tournaments will be tracked by IPR for the remainder of 2007. However, Doyle’s Room tournaments tracked up until Feb. 25 will count towards the IPOY data tabulated at year’s end to determine this year’s online champion.

The Nut Can tournaments ITH Community

Ciaran

Just a few notes this week...

The 2007 ITH Poker League has started, and not surprisingly the first week's winner was Tall-Paul-NutTall Paul, followed by Corbijn and McFoldem in weeks two and three.  More updates on the league will be posted soon including the schedule for March's events.  Each monthly winner will receive an entry to a Stars Monthly Million tournament, with February's tourney ticket going to Corbijn.  Join the League usergroup to be kept abreast of updates.

We recently published our second forum member written Article of the Month, Bazclef's Turbo SNG Tips, and his second article went uncontested for the March monthly entry.  Each winning author gets $100 prize, as well as ITH front page exposure, so check out the details at the beginning of the Article of the Month posting each month, and start writing.  The April entries thread is here.

We've created a new Poker Psychology forum moderated by Piemaster, co-author of the Poker Mindset, which should be hitting store shelves near the end of March.  Check it out.

bonus Finally, ITH is proud to announce our second rakeback deal, with Full Tilt Poker.  We are converting accounts previously opened through ITH to rakeback accounts at 27% upon request, so please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it if you'd like to do so.

The Paradox of Poker: Tournament vs. Cash Game Strategy
Written by Matthew Hilger
Texas Holdem Tips : The Luckiest Player in Poker: The Antithesis of a Bad-Beat StoryVery few players succeed in both tournaments and cash games. Generally, you find players who are specialists. Maybe they travel the tournament trail around the country, playing the World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker Tournament Circuit events. Maybe they play sit-and-go tournaments on the Internet all of the time. Maybe they specialize in small-stakes no-limit hold'em cash games. Or, maybe they specialize in online multitable tournaments. Generally, most poker players are specialists. Read more... strategy

Putting Someone on an Exact Hand
Written by The HendonMob

Those who have seen Phil Helmuth play will know that he loves to put someone on an exact hand, although experience shows that he usually puts you on a pair of eights. Is it possible though?
Sure it is. Are we going to show you how? Sure we are (well we'll try to anyway).

Defending Against Stupidity: The Difference Between a Donkey and a Fish Written by Barry Carter

We all know the expression fish by now: the fish, the sucker, your own personal ATM. I keep a word document on my PC, which serves as my fish list – a comprehensive list of all the very poor and very profitable players I have encountered, and who I want to meet again. I will type all the names into whichever site I am playing at the time before I start a cash game to see who is around, and join their table whenever possible. Read more... strategy

Schooling: Part II
Written by Ian Taylor This is the second of a two-part article on schooling. The first part can be found here.

Schooling is a controversial poker concept describing the behavior of groups of weak players, typically in low-limit games. The theory suggests that a large number of loose players in a limit hold’em game help each other out by pooling outs and giving each other better pot odds. In fact, some say that games with too many players are actually harder to beat than games with only a few loose players.

Texas Holdem Tips : The Luckiest Player in Poker: The Antithesis of a Bad-Beat Story

The contest articles can also be viewed at the Internet Texas Holdem Forum

Turbos have taken off lately due to their reputation as a quick and exciting way to play tournament poker. In this two-part article, I’ll explain how to adapt your game as you move through the blind levels of a Turbo SNG. The first part will explore early and middle play, and the second part will focus on bubble and heads-up play. My SNG of choice is the Stars NL 2-Table Turbo, so the blind levels illustrated below directly correspond to it.
