You are dealt AcKc in early position, and you raise your premium holding. Three players cold-call your raise, as do both the blinds.

The flop is a nice looking Kh6s4s. You bet and all five opponents call.

The turn is 9c. You bet and three of your five opponents call.

The river is Qd. You bet and get raised. You make a crying call and are shown JdTs for the straight.

I think this story will resonate with most poker players, especially those who play (or have played) in the lower limits. Most winning poker players realize that they need to play against inferior players to win. However, sometimes it seems like your opponents are so bad that they actually become more difficult to beat. So many players are staying around with so many random hands, that one of them is bound to hit a hand better than your’s.

And so the theory of schooling was born. A school is a collective noun for a group of fish. Likewise, at the poker table, schooling is a word

Hilger Final Tables Aussie Millions Rebuy Event -
The International Man of Leisure is on the move down under....

(compiled as the Tournament progressed into the Final Table....mostly taken from Nside & Taz)

164 total runners bought into the event including David "The Dragon" Pham, Jeff Lisandro, Michael Tomeny, Tony Bloom, Kenna James, JJ Liu, Matt Hilger, Tony Hachem, Lee Nelson, Mel Judah, Gary Benson, Tony G, Mark Vos, Scott Fischman, and Sarah Bilney. The total prize pool was $464,000 with the top 18 players winning prize money. ...

Matt Hilger jumped out to an early lead along with David Pham. ...

# Tue Jan 09 2007 07:19 GMT
Matthew Hilger gives away some chips!

Matthew Hilger on the button raises to 800 and Paul "The Virus" Ravesi umms and ahhs before calling the extra 500 from the BB. The flop comes {A-Clubs} {A-Spades} {6-Diamonds} and it's checked to the turn which is a {2-Diamonds}. Again it's checked and we see a {5-Diamonds} on the river. Ravesi bets 1500 and Matthew calls. Ravesi turns over {A-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} for a hand that just got better and better from the flop to the river!

# Tue Jan 09 2007 04:11 GMT
Tony Hachem dominating!

Two limpers into the pot and Tony Hachem raises to 450 in the SB, BB (100) folds, Jimmy Soo counts his chips, rubs his forehead and folds. Matthew Hilger asks him why he didn't call because he only has a marginal hand in the cutoff showing Q-10o before mucking. Tony Hachem shows A-Ko.

And then Hilger Busts another one..

Matthew Hilger mini - raises to $4000 and Sam Khouiss makes the call from the BB.

The Flop is 7 of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds

Matt bets $7000 and Sam moves all in. Matt makes the call and shows Queen of Diamonds 10 of Clubs Sam has the Ace of Spades 8 of Clubs

The Turn 6 of Spades and River 10 of Clubs don't help Sam and he is eliminated in 10th place. Sam the Champ is out

Matt Hilger made his second final table so far at the Aussie Millions! He's fourth in chips and trails Gary Benson who has a stack worth over $232K.

An Update from Hilger regarding going into the final table, setup, etc

"Thanks guys. Benson is one seat to my left."

"The hand reports are not very accurate. 1-2 blinds. i raise to QJ from cutoff and player calls (sammy i think). Flop is J87, all diamonds. I bet 7K and he calls. Turn is a blank and he moves all-in.

On the Hand Feature. We both hit our straights on the turn and I believe he was in the SB while I was on the button.

I made two mistakes, both on the last hand before the breaks. I'm happy to have been able to survive them. I was a little unlucky against Benson when I had KK and he says he had AK on a Kxx flop. The turn was a third spade or otherwise I probably win a big one. River was a 4th spade which was even worse but I still won the hand."

Matthew

Of the first 25 hands. Matthew raised 5 times and folded to a reraise twice. Won the other 3 preflop. He reraised the big stack once preflop and bs folded.

Six raises in 25 hands....he's active.

Boo! Matthew makes a nice call of an allin with A8 against K9. Sadly, the river is a 9 and shorty doubles through Matthew

He is now second short stack at the table.

Ugh Matthew takes ahit on hand #30 A8 vs a shorty pushing K9, 9 on the river!

He has an M=5.5
(if the simulator is correct)

Looks like Matthew busted on hand 32 Aq vs AK Crying or Very sad

A $14,000 payout might ease the pain somewhat. GG, Matthew.

Congrats Matthew! 2 on for 2 Final Tables is pretty Nuts!

This is the eighth article in a series called Top 10 Mistakes of Online Players.

The mistakes are not given in any particular order. Most of the mistakes apply to live play also although two or three of them are more applicable to online play. So far we have discussed the following mistakes:

#1: Playing Too Many Starting Hands
#2: Drawing to Outs That Won’t Help You Win
#3: Miscalculating Odds with Two Cards to Come
#4: Calling Raises Too Often on the Turn
#5: Automatically Betting or Raising the River When They Think They Have the Best Hand
#6 Playing at Limits Too High in Relation to Their Bankroll
#7 Not Paying Attention

This leads us into our next common mistake…

Mistake #8: Bluffing Too Much

There is nothing more glamorous and exciting than making a big bluff at the poker table. For the poker player, it doesn’t get much better than raking in a nice size pot with the worst poker hand. For the poker player, satisfaction comes in knowing that you have outplayed your opponent.

Unfortunately, many poker players get themselves in trouble by bluffing too often. This is even truer on the Internet than in live games. Bluffing a lot is just not a profitable endeavor on the Internet, especially in the low-limit games where you frequently have hands go to showdowns.

There are two main reasons to try a bluff in poker. The obvious one is the immediate profit you gain on your successful bluffs. When playing observant opponents, it is also necessary to bluff occasionally so that you will get action in the future when you have solid hands. This is one of the key reasons for Gus Hansen’s success. He wins and loses a lot by all of his bluffs. It is those payoffs he gets when he has a real hand that makes him such a successful player. If you never bluff you won’t get paid off very often while a frequent bluffer will often be challenged. So it is the combination of the immediate profit gained and the advertising value you receive that makes bluffing profitable when done in the right spots.

Bodog Poker Bonuses

Bodog Poker is one of those sites that is truly a different beast upon the online gambling world. It’s a sole-proprietary software site that share it’s concepts and ideas on the poker landscape with no other. For this reason, most players who have had accounts with Bodog Poker either love it or hate it.

There are some interesting reasons for liking Bodog Poker and this revolves mainly around it’s potential as a bonus money cashcow. First off, Bodog is home of the 10% bottomless bonus. Got a spare $500 sitting in NETeller and no bonus offers in front of you? Plunk it into Bodog and get the $50 bonus upfront. That is an incredibly attractive feature. Not only do you have access to the money just deposited but also the bonus you just received. Only catch is that you need to earn 3 Bodog Points for every bonus dollar awarded before you can make a withdrawal. Still, most players could clear the 150 Bodog Point requirements of a $50 bonus in a few sessions of Hold’em. The attractive part is the tournament clearance rate of SnGs and MTTs that makes Bodog truly amazing. For every dollar in SnG or MTT fees that a player pays, he/she gets 3 Bodog Points. Making this method of bonus clearance, essentially, a 100% rakeback opportunity. Since there is no rush [read: no expiration]  date associated with Bodog Poker, players are free to pursue as aggressive or lackadaisical a tournament or cashgame  campaign as they desire.

Word of warning: If Bodog suspects that players are truly aggressing and exploiting their bonus program, they have been known in the past to shut-down bonuses to those individuals. Never a good thing. I generally play enough without a bonus at Bodog that this has never arisen for me. My only advice therefore, is to be consistent with your withdrawals and deposits and treat Bodog Poker with respect while taking advantage of this lucrative bonus cashcow.

How do you get a professional poker player off your front porch?

Pay him for the pizza!

Child's Play

A salesperson comes up to a house and rings the doorbell. No answer. He looks in the front window and sees four young kids playing poker for what looks like huge stakes.

He rings the bell again. This time a seven year old boy in a smoking jacket, with a cigar in one hand and a large bourbon in the other.

"Are your parents in?" asks the salesman politely.

The boy replies, "Does it F@#$!%G look like it?"
