IPR Announces 2007 Schedule

Written by Ryan Peck

Wed, 3, January 2007

Following a wildly successful debut in 2006, IPR is pleased to announce its online multi-table tournament slate for the 2007 Internet Player of the Year race. In devising the ’07 schedule, IPR used feedback from the top players on the Internet, in conjunction with the analyses of its own expert panel.

After deliberations, a pair of daily tournaments will join the Poker Stars Nightly $150 and Wednesday $300. The Fulltilt 35K Guaranteed and Ultimate Bet 35K Guaranteed have been added to feature three exceptional nightly MTTs on IPR. The Fulltilt and UB tournaments come highly recommended from a host of IPR players, and have consistently exceeded the prize pool guarantees over the past few months.

Do you change you play style when you are busted at bluffing. I don't necessarily mean do you go from LAG to Rock. But do you not bluff at a pot (or even pseudo bluff) when you think you might take it because you just got busted doing the same thing?

The Action-Reaction Link in Poker
by the_Hawk

"… for as a man shall sow, so also shall he reap.” (Galatians 6:7)

We normally see the above in a slightly simpler proverbial form, along the lines of: “… as ye sow, so shall ye reap.” However it is worded, the message seems clear. We get what we deserve in the end. There is a clear and definite link between our actions and the consequences. We are in control of our own destinies. Many poker players - particularly those with at least a moderate level of experience and a degree of commitment to the game - are acutely conscious of these sentiments.

Beginning poker players often struggle with the concept that the link between actions and their consequences are often far from straightforward, at least in the short term. Poker books, articles and forum posts constantly remind us to remember the sometimes debilitating effect of luck and variance on our short-term results. However, in poker the link between our actions and their consequences is often much subtler than we sometimes realise.

Let’s take the general issue of bluffing as an example. This illustrates clearly how players at differing levels appreciate the action-reaction link in different ways. Beginning players often overestimate the importance of bluffing. More importantly, they typically view bluffing as a means to an end - as a way of stealing pots to which they are otherwise not entitled. Here, there is a trivial link between the action (the bluff) and the reaction (whether they win the pot). They will only see value in the immediate success - or otherwise - of the bluff. Most importantly of all, their decision-making processes are centred wholly on the immediate hand in question. The decision to run a bluff is based on whether they think it will win them this hand.

The seventh article in a series:  Not Paying Attention

The seventh article in a series
by Matthew Hilger

This is the seventh article in a series called Top 10 Mistakes of Online Players. The mistakes are not given in any particular order. Most of the mistakes apply to live play also although two or three of them are more applicable to online play. So far we have discussed the following mistakes:

#1: Playing Too Many Starting Hands
#2: Drawing to Outs That Won’t Help You Win
#3: Miscalculating Odds with Two Cards to Come
#4: Calling Raises Too Often on the Turn
#5: Automatically Betting or Raising the River When They Think They Have the Best Hand
#6 Playing at Limits Too High in Relation to Their Bankroll

This leads us into our next common mistake…

Mistake #7: Not Paying Attention

Everyone likes to talk about reading your opponents, playing your opponent, etc but how can you do this if you are not paying attention to the action at the table? A very common online mistake is not paying attention. This mistake can lead to numerable mistakes in important strategic decisions.

Let’s first look at some of the common distractions which tempt online poker players:

Poker.com Overall Rating

7.33/10 poker.com

Poker.com accepts players from the United States.

Poker.com is a young site, even by online poker standards, but has managed to grow from a small site into a medium-sized site in 16 months. Credited for this is excellent customer service, great tournament overlays, a large variety of freerolls and good software. There are a few downsides, but as they continue to update and enhance their pokersite, look for Poker.com to address these issues in the future.

Poker.com Review

Poker.com runs sole-proprietary software and thus doesn’t share it’s tables with any other site. As such the traffic is low compared to the larger internet sites. Don’t let this fool you. They still have upwards of 6,000 players during the week. Many of these players are playing NL with buy-ins ranging from $4 to $200, although higher buy-in tables are available. Both full-ring and shorthanded are offered. Fixed Limit players will generally find sub-$1/$2 tables going 24/7, but I find $1/$2 through $4/$8 offered in the evening hours of the US East Coast.

Tournaments and SnGs are offered. SnGs are not Poker.com’s forte. Traffic is light in SnGs, although when the site is in it’s daily zenith of traffic, players can find SnGs in earnest. MTTs are offered around the clock, but buy-ins are on the low-side of $0.06 to $10-$11. The main exception is Poker.com’s $20,000 Sunday Guarantee, which is a freezeout and costs $60 to enter. Players can get into this for as little as $2+$0.20 by playing a $2 satellite. The recent $20,000 guarantee had a mere 210 entrants and granted a huge $35.24 overlay.

Poker.com offers a 100% up to $200 bonus with no expiration date. However, if a withdrawal is made prior to completing the bonus, the remaining bonus expires. One of the drawbacks is that the bonuses clear slowly due to a lack of mid-limit tables to clear them at.

In my estimation, Poker.com is very well suited to new players who wish to start earning their bankrolls at small and micro-stakes tables. The bonus clears decently enough for these players. Likewise, players who want to learn to play MTTs and don’t want to wade through thousands of other players to win tournament money can find many MTTs at Poker.com with small fields and small buy-ins. Finally, the Sunday $20,000 is a goldmine for players with MTT talent.
