Don't Blame me, I Voted for the Nuts!
Poker Nut's News provides objective, and highly opinionated coverage of Online Poker. The following breaking news happens to be of the objective type. Poker Nuts News & Internet Texas Holdem do not endorse and are not affiliated with any political partys or politicians.
The morning after....Here's a snapshot of the outcome of the races for some of the sponsors and co-sponsors of HR 4411 (Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act)
Rep Goodlatte, Bob [VA-6] Won Charlie Bass [R, NH-02] Lost Sue W. Kelly [R, NY-19] LOst Jim Leach [R, IA-02] Lost Heather Wilson [R, NM-02] Even @ 6am EST 11/8/06 J.D. Hayworth [R, AZ-05] Lost Robert Simmons [R, CT-02] Even @ 6am EST 11/8/06 Christopher Shays [R, CT-04] Won Jon Kyle [R, AZ] Won
Mark Foley - Resigned
Note: Although this information may be of interest to Online Poker Players, it the manner in which the bill was passed resulted in almost no public knowlege of the bill, and unless a representative was willing to vote against the "Port Security Bill", then they voted for HR 4411 as 'pork'. It is highly probably that HR 4411 played little or no role in the election results |

The second article in a series:
Top 10 Online Poker Mistakes: #1
Drawing to Outs That Won't Help You
This is the second article in a series called Top 10 Mistakes of Online Players. The mistakes are not given in any particular order. Most of the mistakes apply to live play also although two or three of them are most applicable to online play. Last month we discussed mistake #1, Playing Too Many Starting Hands which leads us now into mistake #2.
Mistake #2: Drawing to Outs that Won't Help You Win
Many players make the mistake of assuming that if they improve their hand they will win. For example, they hold AK with a flop of T95 and decide that the pot odds justify drawing to an ace or king which is approximately 7 to 1 to improve on the next card. The problem with this reasoning is that your opponents might already have you beat or the card that improves your hand could improve your opponent's hand to an even better hand.
For example, in this particular hand, you are in trouble if your opponent holds TT, 99, 55, T9, QJ (the king gives them a straight), AT, A9, A5, KT, etc. Note that all of these are hands that opponents typically play. If you are against any of these hands, you either have practically no chance of winning or a very slim one. Although you are 7 to 1 against improving your hand, the odds are much worse that you will actually win. Drawing to outs that won't help you win is our 2nd major mistake of online players (as well as players in live games). Let's elaborate a little on applying odds in a poker game with some definitions.
An out is an important concept when discussing probability and odds. An out is a card that improves your hand. For example, when you hold two hearts and there are two hearts on the board, you need one more heart for a flush. There are nine remaining hearts or "outs" to improve your hand. If you have Ah Th and you think another ace would also win the hand, you now have 12 outs: the nine hearts and the three remaining aces.
An out is counterfeited when a card that improves your hand gives an opponent an even better hand. For example, you could be hoping for a flush card only to lose to a higher flush or maybe even a full house. You could hit an overcard only to lose to two pair, three of a kind, a straight, or a flush.

ITH's Hilger Final Tables Poker Stars $150
PUBLISHED: NOV. 2, 2006 On Wednesday, November 1, ITH received some good news to begin the month when website creator and poker professional Matthew Hilger reached the final table of the Poker Stars $150. Hilger, who eventually finished in fifth place last Wednesday, took home $5,560 in prize winnings. The Stars $150 remains a nightly piece of the ITH 2006 Internet Player of the Year criteria.
"I haven't played a nightly online tournament in quite some time so it was a lot of fun to do well," said Hilger, who competes under the username IonlyplayAA on Poker Stars. "I found the overall competition to be quite weak as most players were far too heavily focused on pre-flop action. Hopefully I'll be able to play a few more of these before year's end."
Prior to last Wednesday, Hilger had taken somewhat of a hiatus from online multi-table tournaments, focusing primarily on live play. During the summer, he won over 48K at the 2006 World Series of Poker after cashing in four events. Hilger is one of only 63 poker players in the world to have cashed in seven or more WSOP events since 2004. Two years ago, he set a personal WSOP best when we placed 33rd in the Main Event and won 80K for his efforts.
Congratulations to Matthew Hilger for representing ITH well last week, while also proving he is still a force to be reckoned with in the online poker scene!

IPOY Movers and Shakers (Oct. 31 to Nov. 6)
This past week began with a spark and ended with a bang in regards to the 2006 ITH Internet Player of the Year chase. Four esteemed players collected final tables from last Tuesday to Monday, Nov. 6, highlighted by two first-place finishes on Sunday and Monday nights.
First things first, a familiar player made his online presence felt last Wednesday night, as ITH creator Matthew Hilger finished fifth in the Poker Stars $150 on Nov. 1. Hilger, who primarily plays in live events nowadays, proved he still has what it takes to make a difference with his Internet play. For his efforts, Hilger raked in $5,560 last Wednesday, playing under the Stars username of "IonlyplayAA".

Update on the Quest for $1,000,000 - Bull Nags
Let's have an Update from everyone please! - Click here to update! -
What is "the Quest for $1 Million?
- Here's the thread original thread...
2006 ITH Total: $166,721.30 Keep those numbers rolling!
I suppose I should also give Torch official credit for this idea - proving once again he is way too bright and creative for the USAF. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Two goals in this thread:
1. Get the total collected bonus for ITHers in 2006 to $1 Million.
2. Keep it simple for Bull.
Rules:
1. Only one post per member in this thread. When you have more chase data to add, edit you original post, and add it in
2. Only 2006 data please. If you started in December 2005 and finished in January 2006, it counts!
3. Just list accumulated bonus money by site. for example: Absolute - $200 Party - $150 PokerRoom - $150
Total - $500 If you subsequently chase some more at Absolute, then edit the Absolute number and the total.
4. Only list bonus money collected. DO NOT INCLUDE POKER WINNINGS. I hope you had some, but this thread is for bonus money only.
5. Do not include rakeback, prop payments, or freeroll winnings
6. If you have a reasonable estimate on merchandise, you can include it.
(i.e. if your bonus included an iPod Nano, you can include the value of that in your bonus total for that site. Ditto for loyalty program merchandise, that will count.)
Questions? _________________ Peace, Bull
