The only
way to make money at poker is through your
opponents' mistakes. Consequently if you make
fewer mistakes than your opponents then you will
make money, in the long term at least. In fact,
poker is a game based entirely on mistakes. You
must make as few as possible and exploit those
of your opponents (not exploiting an opponents
mistake is, in itself, a mistake).
Theoretically, there is no such thing as a
'good' play as such. There is the correct play
and then there are various degrees of mistakes.
There was
a time when all poker players learnt their trade
playing cash poker games and texas holdem
tournaments were something of a novelty. Today
we have clearly defined tournament players and
clearly defined cash game players. Some of the
best cash game players have little or no success
in tournaments and some hugely successful
MTT/SNG players have never even played cash
games. I was in Dublin last month at the Irish
Open and I witnessed one of the best online
tournament players in the world bust out of the
main event and play in a cash game. 
Why do
players go on tilt? This is not an easy question
to answer. Every player is different, and will
have different reasons why he goes on tilt. A
situation that puts one player on tilt may not
affect another player at all. But, we can make
generalizations about why certain types of tilt
are common and what situations might trigger
them. To do so, we must peel back a number of
layers and look at what influences the way
people play poker.
