Super Satellite Galore
Matthew looks at the influx of satellite tournaments to live events

Recent months have shown a trend in poker site marketing which is not likely to end anytime in the near future. Chris Moneymaker's big win at the WSOP this year has everyone jumping to get a piece of the action. In the past month you could play online satellites for the chance to go on a cruise to Mexico, sunbathe in Aruba, go downunder to Melbourne, win entries into World Poker Tour events with the hopes of being on television, and of course, satellites have already started for the WSOP next year in Vegas.

One of the biggest, and in my mind, the most enticing is the Party Poker Million Tournament aboard a cruise to Mexico next March. Over 250 players have already qualified online and they expect a total prize pool of over $3.0 million. I have already won a spot on the cruise and can't wait for the chance at a first prize that I expect to be $1.0 million.

I say it is enticing for a couple of reasons. There are only a few tournaments a year where you can take home a million dollars. One way is to play in the WSOP main event against the best poker players in the world. Another way is to fork over $25,000 for the WPT main event, again against the top players in the world. The best way is aboard the Party Poker million cruise, against a field that has mostly qualified online. Chances of winning against this type of field is much better than against the best players in the world.

You can qualify online at Party Poker for as little as $25 or enter their weekly $162 satellites every Tuesday night.

Another exciting tournament is the Ultimate Poker Classic held this October in Aruba. This tournament is one of the WPT events shown on the Travel channel. This is the last week for daily satellites with an entry fee of $109.

EmpirePoker recently announced satellites for the Aussie Millions tournament to be held in January at the Crown in Melbourne, Australia. I have played in this tournament once before and I can tell you that the Aussies know how to run a great tournament. If you win, take some extra time after the tourney to enjoy some tennis action at the Australia Open. The expected prize pool is $1.3 million. EmpirePoker is running satellites for as little as $1.

See my Promotions page for details on how to join EmpirePoker and receive a deposit bonus and a free copy of Internet Texas Holdem.

Other great satellites...ThePokerClub is running satellites for the WPT event in Foxwoods this November. Fabulous Poker has started WSOP satellites. The Bugsy Club is also running WSOP satellites for as little as $1.

Paradise Poker just completed satellites for a WPT event, but I am sure that soon there will be more. PokerStars is not currently running any satellites, but I expect them to make an announcement soon.

Satellites are here to stay and are great for everybody...the poker sites, the players, online and live tourneys. They are a great way for amatuer players to get a chance at the big time. Give them a try if you have the chance.

For more information about these satellies, go to each site's website. The Tournament Trail section of my website also has a calendar for the major super satellites. Good luck!
