I wonder if players like that are just bored with poker that they have to add more things like that to make it interesting, or whether they just have the urge to put action on everything in their lives.

I think it's a little bit of both. I would venture that most of them got gambler's blood in them and after playing thousands and thousands of normal hands of poker, this type of thing keeps them interested and their blood flowing.
In my opinion, it's dumb. |

I know the rules of Omaha, but can't play it.
I know no other form of poker....
