I am presently reading the section of "protecting your hands" and the example your provide starting on Page 127. Jump now to page 129 and you say your opponent could call with a gutshot straight draw. Your opponect could have a set of 7's or 3's as well, which would make him 15:1 to hit.

My question then becomes, should you just consider the possible hand he can make that has the lowest odds for him to hit?

I have never read about anything like this before so this is entirely new to me, which is why I was having problems tying to reason how (Step 2 - Pg 129) we arrived at having to "protect" $1,030. I am math "poor" and am sitting at a table with piles of chips and a calculator while trying to work through the problems 1 step at a time.

I finally figured it out by going on to Step 3 and saw the actual math to the problem. In Step 3 the figure is $1,030K. The missing K in Step 2 had me at a loss for a short while. I did say I was math "poor".

I did feel pretty good as I read on and you state "Note that even if you bet slightly less than $98K etc.", as I had guessed $80,000 to the original question of "How much should you bet." Page 127

My reason was, I have a strong hand and want some action without tipping off the strength of my hand. I thought a bet of just over half the pot would look like an information type bet while still getting some money in the pot.

I am still enjoying the book but it looks like I will have a challenge trying to keep up.

Ray
