I have no idea which platform is better, but Apple's well-marketed and historical position as David taking on Goliath is unassailable. You waste your time howling at the moon, good Sir. |

| I notice that smart phone thingy makes no claims about surfing the web, which seems to be the main justification of the iphone. |

There's browsing, and then there's browsing. I used to browse with my pocket PC, but it was hardly a satisfying experience.
How does the zune browser compare to the iphone browser? |

Smartphone is a generic term encompassing lots of models. Technically the iPhone is a type of smartphone.
A lot, but not all, smartphones use MS Windows Mobile as the OS. And actual capabilities can vary from smartphone to smartphone.
Of course MS then branded Smartphone (note the capital S). But other possible OS's include Palm, Blackberry, Symbian, and Linux. Symbian has the lions share (72%) of the market on a worldwide basis, followed by Linux (popular in Asia) , then MS (which is probably leading in North America).
There is no industry standard for a smartphone, basically it's an advanced cellphone, usually running an OS on which you can run (and add) various applications. Many of today's cellphones would have been considered smartphones a few years ago, it's a moving target. Check out the wikipedia article for a good discussion. |

There is a distinction between a smartphone and a pda with phone capabilities.
There are phones out there that can provide some net apps and services - specialised browsing, some email functions and the like. These are usually more or less a mobile handset looking device.
Then there are the PDA's - these are really like a small PC. You can run office applications, a choice of browsers, they have network capabilities and you can run media apps, gps apps - heaps of stuff. Very much like a mini laptop. You can also do all of the usual phone functions. These devices do not look like a phone.
The iphone is in the second (PDA) category. Problem with the iphone is that it does nothing new - which is a shame, and it wont do all the things that other PDA's can already do - but they get away with it. Touted features such as running the whole thing with your finger on the touch screen have been around since the very first palm handhelds come out. This is the way you use PDA's from windows, symbian and palm.
The user interface is where these devices need improving - and it seems that this is where the iphone has made big improvements - although I heard the same things about OSX from apple and when I used it it was just like any other OS - some things were where you thought they'd be and they 'just worked' whilst other elements were hidden without thought and didn't 'just work' - despite the marketing hype. |

Spark's Port-O-Rotary is no landline - it's a full tri-band (900/1800/1900MHz) mobile handset, complete with SIM slot and a 2000mAh rechargeable battery should you care to carry it out on in the road with you. That said, it weighs over 900g, so it's not exactly pocketable, but the battery should last 4-5 days on a single charge.
There's only ringtone, of course: literally so, since it's generated by a pair of metal "gong-style" bells, Spark claims - there's even an MP3 of it in action here. And the sound's pumped through original earpiece and microphone cones, so don't expect a clear, digital-like signal, the company warned.
It doesn't come cheap, mind: Spark wants $499 before postage and packing.

| Someone I know about just the handset from an old style phone that plugs into most Nokia mobiles for about £20. It was funny for a couple of weeks, then I think he just got bored of it. |

You MS guys crack me up.
I've had about six different BlackBerries and I wouldn't go back for love nor money. It isn't just the feature set, its the UI and the design. I'll buy the next gen whenever it comes out.
It is exactly like the people who said the iPod was no big deal. There was already a Rio and a Compaq MP3 player. You don't see many of them now. |
