This is a cross post from Barry's forum for those that visit both.

This is a long post and there is only one question: When to start to study the intermediate and advanced books? You can skip to the bottom line if you like.

I read Dr Al's book on worst poker enemy and best poker friend and in the back he has some suggested reading material. Interestingly enough he does not recommend his book until you can beat small games.

Quote:
If you can not beat the low limit games then don't read anything advanced since it might confuse you (not in order and not complete):
Beginners

Internet Texas Hold'em, Hilger
Winning Low Limit Hold'em, Jones
Fundamentals Secrets of Hold'em, Caro
Fundamentals of Poker, Malmuth
Getting Started in Hold'em, Miller

Players that can beat small games

Caro, Book of Tells
Carson, Complete Book of Hold'em Poker (2001)
Ciaffone, Improve Your Poker (1997)
Kreiger, Hold'em Excellence
Miller, Sklansky, Malmuth, SSHE
Schoonmaker, Psychology of Poker
Schoonmaker, Your Worst Poker Enemy
Sklansky, TOP
Sklansky, Hold'em Poker (1989)

Advanced Players

Caiffone and Brier, Middle Limit Hold'em Poker
Feeney, Inside Poker Mind
Malmuth, Poker Essays
Sklansky, HEFAP
Taylor, The Poker Mindset
Tanenbaum, Advanced Hold'em Poker

Barry Tanenbaum recommended these books to me

Quote:
Winning Low Limit Hold'em by Lee Jones
Psychology of Poker by Dr. Alan Schoonmaker
Play of the Hand by Roy Cooke. (may be wrong title).
Theory of Poker by Sklansky.
Hold'em for Advanced Players by Sklansky and Malmuth.
Hold'em on the Come by Rolf Slotboom
Middle Limit Hold'em Poker by Ciaffone and Brier
How Good is your Limit Hold'em by Jacobs and Brier
Zen and the Art of Poker by Larry Phillips
Book of Tells by Caro
Read 'em and Reap by Joe Navarro

Ok, that's enough for now.

I can beat the micro and low limit (up to 1/2) online games - 28,900 hands and 1.5bb/100 hands.

So I know the basics of Hold'em I would think that the basic books listed by Dr. Al other than ITH and WLLH would be a waist of my time.

However, until I can beat the live low limit games I need to concentrate on just reading and mastering the basics and study

Internet Texas Hold'em, Hilger
Winning Low Limit Hold'em, Jones and maybe
Hold'em on the Come, Rolf Slotboom

Then move on to advanced books.

Are there any other books that I need to study now other than WLLH, ITH and the psychology books, ZEN, Poker Mindset, Enemy, etc.

Some recommend SSHE by Miller and company - I have read this several times.

It might be simply that I have learned everything that I can from the beginners books and I now need to just work on implementing what I have learned.
