I am a beginner in stud hi/lo so I am looking for comments on all streets.
Poker Stars
Limit Stud Hi/Lo (8 or better)
Limit: $0.10/$0.20 ($0.02 ante/ $0.5 bring in)
7 players
3rd street: ($0.14, 7players)
Seat 1:
Seat 2:
Seat 3:
Seat 4:
Seat 5:
Seat 7: (hero)
Seat 8:
Action:
Seat 4 brings it in for $0.05, Seat 5 calls, Hero calls, Seat 8 calls, Seat 1 calls, 2 folds.
Would anyone raise here? I think this hand likes many opponents so I don't want to scare them of. Correct thinking?
4rd street: ($0.39, 5 players)
Seat 1:
Seat 4:
Seat 5:
Seat 7: (hero)
Seat 8:
Action:
5 checks.
I have only 3 cards for a low and just a gutshot + backdoor flushdraw for high. I don't see any point in betting here.
5th street: ($0.39, 5 players)
Seat 1:
Seat 4:
Seat 5:
Seat 7: (hero)
Seat 8:
Action:
Seat 4 checks, Seat 5 checks, Hero bets $0.20, Seat 8 calls, Seat 1 calls, Seat 4 folds, Seat 5 calls.
Probably the best card I could get. I now have a OESD, a flush draw for high and I have also 4 cards to a low.
6th street: ($1.19, 4players)
Seat 1:
Seat 5:
Seat 7: (hero)
Seat 8:
Action:
Seat 1 bets $0.20, Seat 5 calls, Hero raises to $0.40, Seat 8 calls, Seat 1 calls, Seat 1 calls.
Another good card. I now have a strait for hi and a 7,6,5,4,3 for lo. It looks like they are both good.
River: ($2.79, 4 players)
Seat 1:
Seat 5:
Seat 7: (hero)
Seat 8:
Action:
Seat 1 checks, Seat 5 checks, Hero bets $0.20, Seat 8 calls, 2 folds.
Clear value bet I think. |

I don't see any mistakes. The only possible change would be that a 3rd street raise might be called for _if_ it is not likely to scare off customers. Like you say, you don't want to do that, but in a .10/.20 game it might not stop anyone from calling. (I don't actually know how microlimit stud8 games play, but think it might be possible that a raise would be unrespected).

I complete 3rd street. If it had already been completed in front of me then I'd just call but you should go ahead and complete premium starting hands like that on 3rd street. You'll still get called by most playable hands, its not going to scare anyone away. You're almost expected to complete it when you're playing a hand on 3rd.
Good check on 4th. FWIW you do not have a gutshot.
From 5th street on you're just betting and raising at every opportunity. Pretty straightforward and you made the correct and obvious moves. |

Thanks. The table was surprisingly tight, sometimes just 3-way on the 4th street. I didn't want to chase anyone away, hopefully people hit some kind of crappy pair on 4th street and will pay me of.
As you can see, I sometimes have a little bit or trouble reading my own hand as I indeed didn't have a gutshot on 4th street. So many cards to look at compared to hold'em.
Seat 8 showed: and was drawing dead for both hi and lo on the 6th street. Scooped pots are always very nice. |

I agree with everyone. At this level missing the 3rd street bet isn't that bad. You'll likely make it up later. Everyone elses door cards aren't to threatening and you have a good low starting hand so a raise is probably optimal here.
When possible I like to build the pots early with strong hands to keep players in throughout. Even tight players will chase (correctly in most cases) their draws when the pot is big.
I like the check on 4th. Your hand is pretty transitional at that point and you need clarity on 5th if you can continue with a low draw or abandon ship with a middling hand.
Perfect card on 5th street.
6th and 7th play themselves. |
