Has anyone seen this ad on Yahoo? There is a big banner at the top of my inbox that reads Stop - No Internet Gambling. It then goes on to say that companies and people who place bets with them are breaking the law. THe banner links to the following organization.

Doesn't Yahoo have fantasy sports games?

I don't play on Yahoo, so I'm gonna ask a few qestions...

1)Do they charge for their games (or at least some of their games)?
2)If yes, do they give out prizes to those who do the best?
3)Again,if yes, don't they want people to spend money with the chance of getting more money back?

Isn't this one of the definitions of gambling?
(Without getting into a discussion on that subject, of course.)

Their literature stresses they have no position on legalized gambling and their Statement Concerning Current Internet Gambling Legislation is more concerned about lack of funding for problem gambling

Quote:

It is striking that none of the proposed internet gambling measures contains any funding
for prevention programs for youth, treatment programs for problem and pathological
gamblers or research to learn more about the causes and consequences of gambling
problems.

They go on to say

Quote:

A snapshot of the anecdotal evidence shows there is little doubt that individuals have developed problems by gambling on the internet. The National Problem Gambling Helpline (800.522.4700) was dialed more than 30,000 times between January 1 and March 15, 2006. In a review of the 1,300 calls for immediate help, 106 clients (8%) reported that their primary problem was internet gambling

They played with the numbers, 8% looks high. 106/30,000 is 0.35%.

Overall, their concern appears to be research funding and internet gambling is a hot topic they've latched onto.

All gambling is bad.

Except for the gambling that generates taxes in my state.
And the gambling that funds the schools we don't want to pay for.
And when we call it "hedging" or "speculating".
And when it's "fantasy" and you can't actually win money.
Ad infinitum...

In my State, The Governator [which is starting to sound more and more ominous as he has taken a wrecking ball to California] Arnold Schwarzen-Kennedy is pushing for privatization of our State Lottery. From one big bureaucracy to another. Although, as we all know, Horse Betting, State Lotteries and Fantasy Sport betting is all protected by the UIGEA, so I expect a huge Lottery site to pop up on the Internet.

I'm contemplating an Initiative for the November elections calling for a Politician Hunting Season, where we could buy permits. And no, I won't allow outsiders. Get your own politicians. Violation for poaching ours will carry a stiff penalty. We'll make you live here for 4 years.

I think it is just rediculous that they want to ban online poker - of course it can make you addicted and lose money, but there are so many other things out there that bear the same risk - ban those first Confused
