So I just got Collin Moshman's book and started playing some $5.50 9 player SNG's at stars, and it's going ok but it's early days (41 SNG's played). I was thinking about trying some of the $6.50 turbo's, for the rake discount but I consider myself a pretty novice player, are turbo's harder or easier than normal SNG's, or are they just different? Is the skill level noticeably different at a turbo compared to a normal speed SNG of the same buy in?

Turbos emphasize a different set of skills, namely high blind play and pushing ranges. The advantage of turbos is that they are much quicker to play but the downside is that because there isn't much room to play poker they can easily feel like push-botting SnGs. I also believe that the variance is higher in turbos because high blind pushing plays a much bigger role than in regular speed SnGs. I started off playing regulars, then went to turbos, and recently went back to regulars because I find them much more enjoyable. Turbos can become very mind-numbing after a while.

Pretty well answered already.

Turbos are much easier to play but typically provide a lower ROI. The lower ROI is offset by the ability to play higher volume though. Variance is definitely crazy as you're gonna be in 60/40s and 55/45s constantly. Be sure to have a good understanding of M before you start.

This isn't a downside. Correctly shoving 84s and getting incorrectly called by ATo and sucking out is a huge upside. Wink
