How can one know what their approximate win % is pf? I'm reading Every Hand Revealed by Gus Hansen and in quite a few hands he throws out %'s of how big a dog or favorite he is without knowing his opponents holding. Is there a basic equation for this?

For example, you're holding 88 on the button. Everyone folds to you, you raise it 3x BB and say BB re-raises. How can you establish a % based upon the limited information you have. Do you put BB on a range and adjust your % according to that range?

Forgive me if this post is naive or not detailed/explained the way it should be.

That's essentially what he is doing. He's making an educated guess based on how the hands he is playing fair against the likely holding of his opponent.

If you play around with pokerstove you can come up with a pretty good idea of how he is coming up with the numbers he is working with.

Thanks taardvark for your response.

My next question is if anyone knows of a book that provides ranges for chip stacks, positions, etc.? I'm sure a book has been mentioned but so far the books I've come across says nothing about what potential ranges an opponent can have.

Alternatively, if anyone knows a website that'd be useful, that'd be cool too.
