Yes I know this is a poker forum but hopefully someone can point me to the error in my ways on this question...

anyhow my question applies the the increased house edge in euorpean BJ where the dealer is not delt a down card.

In going over this in my head for a while now I cant see how it should have any effect after all the dealer still acts in the same way aside from the fact that he is not delt his downcard untill after all the players have drawn. (as far as I can tell anyhow)

Yet The wizard of odds gives an increaed house adantage for this style BJ. Why is this the case?

just like the odds of the next card comming off on the river completing a flush for you is 9:46 if you pull the top card bottom card or one from the middle should not the distribution of the dealers hand still remain the same even if he delt his down card from a differnet position in the deck?

I think it is because when you are against a dealer blackjack in American 21, you only lose your original wager. In the European rules, you lose extra bets any time you double or split because you do all of that before you find out if he has blackjack. They also don't allow you to double on soft 13-18s, which reduces your edge as well.

The key is not when the hole card is dealt but whether and when the dealer checks for blackjack, as nside suggests.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackjack wrote:
European No-Hole-Card Rule: the dealer receives only one card, dealt face-up, and does not receive a second card (and thus does not check for blackjack) until players have acted. This means players lose not only their original bet, but also any additional money invested from splitting and doubling down. A game that has no-hole-card doesn't necessarily mean you will lose additional bets as well as original bets. In Australia for example, a player beaten by a dealer blackjack may keep all split and double bets and lose only the original bet, thus the game plays the same as it would if there were a hole card.
