First off I'm a newbie here and to the world of poker been playing about 8 weeks. Matthew great book it has'nt left my side yet.

I do have a question about the starting hands chart sorry if its been asked before but i could'nt find it.

When for example it says to call 3, can we include the big blind as a caller?

So if everyone folds apart from 2 callers can the big blind make the third?

Also I was making the mistake of calling if say 3 peopole had already called but folded if a raise came after me. I now know to call that raise thanks to another thread.

Thanks for any input, and agian thanks to Matthew for putting together a great book and creating this forum for further referance and guidance, good job!!

The short answer is no. "Call x" for example means that there must be x callers in front of you preflop. One piece of text describing the terms in the tables should make this absolutely clear; if a hand is described as "Call 1" then you should fold first-in unless otherwise stated. Note that some hands in some positions are "raise first-in, call 1" but generally speaking "call 1" means fold first-in.

And yes, if you have already entered the pot you should always call a raise. "Nearly always" is more accurate for a more experienced player, but for a newbie it's simpler to say always call a raise once you're in.

You do not count the BB, but you can count anyone who posts from another position. I'm too lazy to search for where this has been posted before, but I know that it has.

Right. The point of the number of callers is the total money in the pot, not the position of people who put it there. But since the BB is always there, there's no sense in counting that, or every choice would be "call 1" or whatever. So this refers to small bets in the pot apart from the blinds.
