Hey guys. In Vegas at the moment trying out some No Limit 1/2.. Sitting down with $200 a go.

Big hand occured tonight and I need a bit of advice!

A pretty standard table.. good cards bring big pots, with not much bluffing going on. A few passive players around.

So I'm first to act and get dealt AJ. I decide to raise up to $10 as I have a great image and the past few raises were folded round...

Anyway I get 3 callers behind me.... so the pot is already $43...

The flop comes AJ8 rainbow. I bet out $20.. 2 people call, and the last person raises to $100. I have $140 left ($170 at the start of the hand).... The 2 other players are fairly passive and I now have a big decision with top 2 pair!

The player that raised hasn't played many hands at all. The other 2 seemed to call a lot of bets but make no moves. The one guy to my left had $300 but the rest had pretty much the same as me.

Your thoughts and feelings on this would be much appreciated Smile I'll tell the result after a few replies

- I wouldn't raise AJ utg in most games.

- Once I flop top two, I am never folding if my stack is only $200. I don't fold here if stacks are $400 deep. After the flop raise, you might as well push and hope an 8, Q, or K don't hit (T9 and AK or AQ might be opponents hands here).

I'm pushing this as only one hand is likely to be beating me here; 88. AA or JJ are unlikely as I have two of the cards and those hands might have re-raised pre-flop; AA certainly should have. So that leaves a set of eights as my only worry.

I don't think the big raise size post-flop says much but it is a big re-raise on a rainbow board and maybe 88 has little to fear here and might have bet a little less. Off course since it is a rainbow board either of the two callers may be slowplaying 88 too.

What else can the re-raiser have? AJ is also possible and maybe a loosely played A8. T9 suited is also possible but it is very aggressive at this table to play that way. AK or AQ count for a lot of combinations too if villain happily feels those hands are worth his stack.

Although it is a bit worrying in view of how the table has been playing I don't think I'm going to fold this in fear of one hand. There are plenty other explainations for villain to play this way. For me this is an easy push.

In live games, don't see it as NL1/2. See it as NL25 during the weekends, during the best hours. Online strategies and ranges do not work there.

I agree with Elmo there that AJ is a clear fold, or even while I am absolutely against limping in online games, I think a limp is fine here. I prefer a fold though.

As played, I think this is very interesting and my full ring/live games are not good enough to know what the optimal play is here.

These would be my thoughts if I found myself in the same situation:

- Villain may have a set, I have very little equity, but without much knowledge I am not folding top two here with current pot size and remaining stack sizes.

-Villain may have worse two pair, yummy.

- There are other people involved who may have other bullshit hands.

So, with that knowledge, and knowing I won't fold there yet without much more history, I want to find the most profitable move, and I think the best move here is to just call trying to keep more players in with hands like 9T here, or worse (if you call here in live games, worse hands like 9T will call often enough I think).

With that knowledge, I would just call here, and shove on any turn. This looks like a spot where I want to keep other people in because I am not sure about the strength of my hand, assume it's best, but want more callers in this spot to increase my winnings when I do have the best hand.

Hey. Thanks for the replies. I'm happy thinking that my raise pre flop was the error in my play...

Anyway I folded to that raise worried about the set because of the tight players involved in the hand.

The turn came Q, river K to make AJ8KQ...

The raiser on the flop shows AQ and the one other guy who called showed 9T to take it with the straight.

So turns out I was ahead when I folded, but would have got crucified anyway... Anyway thanks for your advice!
