Ok,
So most of you don't know this, but I posted something in another section of the forum about a Charity Tournament that I want to put together for the non profit that I work for. As I've proceeded I've heard, a few times now, that it's illegal to host such an event in the Washington D.C. area. The plan was to either charge $150 or $50, both with rebuys, and both with a small percentage (half for the $50, only $30 for the $150) going to the prize pool. Is this legal or not?
I'm thinking not. But if instead of rewarding the top 5 or 10 players with money, would I be able to give them some other kind of reward? I was thinking of going to a travel agency and offering them a sponsorship, where they can pony up tickets to Bermuda or something to the top few winners. What do you think?
If I was doing something that might get me arrested, I'd probably look for more reliable sources of information about the legalities in my area than a poker forum. The laws are somewhat different in each place, so you'd need advice from a DC lawyer (or a Virginia lawyer if it will take place in Virginia).
No one will likely have a very clear answer. I've seen a number of them held in the DC/Virginia area, but usually they don't award a percentage of the money to the players. Usually, they award prizes that were donated and keep all the money.

Good idea. The thing is, I'm clueless about how to go about requesting corporations to donate to my cause, but I'll ask for help from someone in the office.
Thoughts on good places to go? Lamborghini dealership maybe? A Murciellago would be a great prize. =) No but really though.
