| I doubt much will come of this, but it is good news that there are politicians out there willing to fight our corner. These are the kind of channels that the PPA should be exploring, working with people like Frank. |

A couple of quick points:
(1) No one really knows the chances of this bill ever becoming law, and anyone who authoritatively claims to do so, is exaggerating their base of knowledge.
(2) Nevertheless, I personally would be shocked if this bill became law in the current congressional session.
(3) On the other hand, the bill is a positive, necessary first step.
My hunch is that the bill will suffer the fate of many other sensible proposals: i.e., it will have to be reintroduced for several years before it achieves a critical mass of support. |

But we can establish a range. Say somewhere between slim and none... |

| E-Gaming Review wrote: | Barney Frank to propose regulation of internet gambling
Barney Frank, House Representative from Massachusetts and chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, has announced details of proposed regulation for internet gambling that could signal a sea-change in US legislative attitudes to the online gaming industry.
The Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act of 2007 would see online gambling legalised in the US for the first time. The financial services committee will hold a debate at a date to be determined in June of this year. It will be entitled: “Can internet gambling be regulated to protect consumers and the payments system?”
According to the draft bill published for the first time this afternoon, “a licensing and regulatory regime for internet gambling in the US is needed to provide appropriate protections against underage gambling, compulsive gambling, money laundering and fraud for those citizens who choose to gamble online.”
The bill was introduced at a press conference held this afternoon in Washington DC. In a statement, Frank said that existing legislation was “inappropriate interference on the personal freedom of Americans and this interference should be undone”.
The press statement goes on to say that traditional forms of legalised gambling already exist in nearly every state.
“By continuing to prohibit internet gambling in the US, the US has left Americans who choose to gamble online without meaningful consumer protections. The proposed legislation would institute practical and enforceable standards to bring transparency to internet gambling and provide consumers the protections they expect and deserve.”
Said one industry insider on hearing the news: “This is encouraging, especially since it recognises the industry can be regulated and consumers can be protected. This is a step forward, whereas prohibition was exactly the opposite.”

And Slim just left town, as the saying goes. It is easier to ban something than it is to allow it and once banned hard to un-ban. |

There is one factor though which may help this bill on it's journey. That is the WTO ruling. Add in the fact that the European Union has stated that they may well weigh in on this as well (don't remember where I saw that) and it at least adds a little more initiative to all this.
At the very least this bill keeps prospects alive and starts the debate going anew.
