Friends, today I got downsized. It was not a huge surprise, since the newspaper industry has been dying for years, but I was hoping I could at least make it one more year to find something else.
Anyway, now I'm a free agent.
Since I love poker, I was looking for a way to combine poker and my writing skills.
Anyone out there have any suggestions? Maybe someone looking for an editor/co-writer for a poker book? Or thinking of starting a magazine?
I'm all ears. |

wow, you were telling me at the wsop about this. You sounded like it was a couple years off though. Do you have other hobbies besides poker?
You can always send your resume to places like pokernews and see what they say, though I'm not sure you'd get paid near anything that you were before. |

Yeah, I was pretty sure this was going to happen sometime in the next 12 to 18 months. It just came a little sooner than expected.

Actually, I already applied for a golf writing job. I probably won't get it, but it's a start.
There are also a few other baseball internet possibilities out there (mlb.com, espn.com), but right now there are so many out-of-work sports writers just like me it's like everyone jumping off the Titanic into 3 lifeboats. |

Why not?
Start on myspace, or something similar.
Get enough people reading it, and I'm sure advertising will follow.
This, of course, would not be an overnight thing. |

Sorry to hear that jfletch. There was a book I read a few years back that had an interesting slant on writing Damn! Why Didn't I Write That. It focused on the longevity of non-fiction books and gave numerous examples. If I remember right, some of the most consistent sellers were reference books on niche topics. It might twig some ideas for you while you're looking.
What about a book on key WSOP hands from the beginning until the 2008 WSOP? Along the lines of 'One hand at a time'? (never mind, just checked Amazon and there's a '52 Greatest Moments World Series of Poker' that's just come out). Damn...lol
Anyway, hope something comes your way soon. |

| There's always a demand for intelligent, well rounded people. Sorry to hear about the layoff - hopefully it leads to bigger and better things for you. |

I dunno. I'm pretty sure that jfletch is straight.
I'm sorry about your misfortune, although I have little to offer in terms of advice. Its a terrible time in the newspaper biz. |

this may well be the most outrageous (yet hilarious) threadjack ever
Fletch I am sorry to hear your bad news
try and see it as new begining with all the positivity that brings
It seems to me that the poker writing is fairly saturated already
there is going to be a lot of work over the next few years for all kinds of number crunchers. accountants, solvency specialists, analysts, actuaries etc etc etc there is going to be GOOD money for anyone who is handy with a spreadsheet... not only is this mess going to need to untangled somehow (requiring number crunchers) there are going to be lots of businesess going to the wall, lots of redundancies, lots of takeovers, lots of mergers. these all need number crunchers.
getting the skills required to do these jobs should not be difficult for a man of your intellect in a very short period of time. I suspect you may well be able to many of these jobs already
hope that helps
but thing I would most recommned is that you read "awaken the giant within" by Tony Robbins
good luck |

| You know, the first time I read an ITH Mafia thread I thought to myself: 'Hmm, someone could put this in a book and sell it...' |
