I like the "four color deck" option in online poker. If you haven't used it, clubs are green and diamonds are blue. The advantage is that when you're multi-tabling, it's a lot easier to see if that last card puts a possible flush on the board or not - sometimes with many tables open a club and spade can look similar.

Do you use the four color deck? Is it blasphemy or just sensible play?I know some players really hate it. Just curious what people think.

I use the four color deck only since recently and like it a lot. I used to think it would not matter, but after reading an interesting post somewhere, I decided it couldn't hurt.

The basics is that the human mind can recognize colors much faster and with less processing needed than suits. Assume for instance when multitabling that you aren't really paying that much attention, for instance when you checked in the big blind with 7 of Diamonds : 9h and missed the flop totally with two other players in the hand. You check, pay attention to other tables and the turn comes a second heart. You may have to mentally check if you have a flush draw, and have to look at your cards again.

Now with a four color deck the turn comes a green card, which does not even matter since your cards are different colors so even when you have nearly forgotten about your exact hand while focusing on other tables, a backdoor flush draw is impossible.

Another example is when you are for instance playing on 4 tables, hold AQs and AQo on first two tables and are involved in a very tough decision on table 3. It's possible to sometimes make a mistake on the first two tables when you mix up the tables. This is extremely rare, but can happen, and could cost money. Four color deck makes that much less likely.

In short, a 4 color deck requires less mental actions, which is less tiresome, without any drawbacks to it.

If I played a larger percentage of my poker online I'd probably do it. I play enough live that I like to keep consistency.

Try 8-tabling on a laptop with a two colour deck and then decide.

Interestingly, at Sharkapalooza, someone brought a four color deck and people didn't like it.
