Re: Matthew's starting hand charts:

9 handed: Early position is just the 1st two to act (after the blinds)

8 handed: Early position is just the 1st seat after the blinds

7 handed : No early position, the 1st three to act are in middle position

I think the answer you'll get is that with some marginal PF hands it may make a small difference based solely on the math, but I would guess that the number of hands in this category that you would/should be playing anyway would be relatively small. As always, the post-flop play will be more important.

FEP is correct. However, the book was aimed at full ring games meaning 8-10 players. At 7-handed, I might raise with just slightly more hands UTG than the books say to from middle position, depending on a number of factors since 7-handed is getting close to short-handed. But for the most part, FEP's explanation is the way i would use the charts.
