I'm new to this place and finding my way around so I apologise if this has been covered elsewhere.

In what I assume is the first (2003) edition of ITH on page 55 it is suggested that some home players might find consider check raising to be impolite.

Unless it's explained later on somewhere I can't understand for the life of me why this should be the case. It seems like a perfectly legitimate way of playing a pot?

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance Very Happy

Some older players in casino's may also take offense. Although it is perfectly within the rules of poker it can be seen as ruining the fun of a game. A lot of times, especially in low limit games, players will check the river even when they know they are ahead just to give the other guy a break, ect. In these types of games a c/r can occasionally get a reaction.

The first time I played live it was in a 10/20 game and during the first orbit I c/r a guy on the river and the whole table kind of raised their eyebrows at me. They were a regular crowd that all knew each other and they were used to giving each other breaks on the river, not punishing each other. Imediately everybody knew that I was there to play serious poker.

Sklansky actually recommends considering not c/r in games where it may cause other players to take you more serious or attempt to play better against you. I think this reaction is becoming less common though. I didn't see anyone get grumpy in my recent visit to Vegas.

I couldn't have explained it better than Taz. I also agree with his assessment that players expect this type of play a little more than they did even a few years ago. It really comes down to players who don't understand the game very well - and they feel you should just bet when you have the best hand. It is the river check-raise that might anger people the most.
