One great point is made from Howard Lederer. How can the US appeal to the WTO to protect our property rights for software and movies, when we don't respect the organization itself in implementing its decisions? This has been discussed elsewhere and I believe it could be a big help in getting some type of law passed eventually.
I told my campus news paper last week to save me an editorial spot on this subject. I'm working on it right now, can't wait to finish. So much to say in 450 words.

While I am excited about the momentum I am just so skeptical about US or State level regulation. Everyone has to have a piece of the action I guess.
Sites were perfectly regulated before the bill was passed last fall. If a site scammed or screwed up everyone knew about it and quit playing there. No better regulation that that. US regulations didn't save anyone from Enron or Worldcom so why the heck does everyone think this is such a good idea. Regulation does not mean that the consumer is necessarily protected from squat.
They should over turn the previous law for no other reason than it is a bad law run through in the middle of the night in such a way that even criminal elements would blush with embaressment. [/rant]
I think the argument for regulation isn't so much for protecting the gamblers, but more so that the state/federal government can get tax revenues from it.
I do agree though, that best case senario would be to go back to the way things were before the bill (gambling illegal in the US to operate, but legal for people to gamble on off-shore sights)...but that just is not going to happen.
EDIT: I forget that it technically was still illegal for us to gamble online in the eyes of the DOJ according to the Wire Act.
I sincerely hope the WTO does as some have speculated it could, and basically give Antigua the right to violate US intellectual property laws without retribution. Once they start pumping out DVDs of Hollywood product and CD-ROMs of Microsoft software and legally shipping them all over the world, congress will hear an earful from people whose opinions (and money) they care about.
