Hi all
Im playing 9 handed and raise first in wiv pok tens from mp, all fold to the BB who flat calls. I have no read on him as im fresh at the table. Flop comes 2 suited rags and a K, I put in a continuation bet and BB raises me, I call and another K comes on the turn so I lead out thinking the BB was either bluffing at the first K or had a flush draw or an underpair, I figure if he raises me again he probably has trip Ks and im outa there. Anyway he just calls. I bet the river jwen the flush doesnt come for value and he chex along behind to turn over a FH 8s over Ks. He was sitting on pok 8s all along and had tripped up wen an 8 fell on the flop. Could I have got away from this hand at any stage or is it just one of those things?
Cheers

In order to properly assess this hand we need to know stack sizes, bet amounts and blind levels.
But as you wrote it, it depends on his flop raising range. Your turn bet is probably ok.
The river bet depends on whether your value bet will be called by worse hands. If he has a busted draw and will fold to a bet but call with a better hand then your bet will lose you money. If some of the time that you check he will bet with a worse hand (like a busted flush draw) then you gain when he bluffs.
If you want to see a showdown and do not want to have to pay off a big river bet you could bet as a blocking bet with the intention of folding to a raise. This line is sometimes best if you fear that a player may use a scare card(s) to bet you off of the best hand by making a big river bet.

Shoulda mentioned it was 1/2 fixed limit, interesting points about the block bet thats not a phrase ive heard before perhaps it usually used in NL which I never play. I take your point about being way behind or way ahead on the river. I usually take that into consideration thanx to a excellent article I read on this site about river value bets some time ago. Its just soo hard to put someone on a pocket pair thats tripped up. So many players these days will be ultra aggresive with a pair in hand and a pair on the board.

Oh yes, a limit cash game... that makes a big difference then...
Your thinking looks decent to me but I'd check/call the river to induce a bluff, a worse hand is pretty unlikely to call on that board unless your opponent is a big calling station and will call with a pair less than tens.
I typically donk bet much in limit... but some others do. If your opponent is a thinking opponent that donk bet is not going to look like a K to him. A K hand would likely c/r in this spot. You go for a c/r but your not getting him off a flush draw and its going to cost you alot when he has a K so I dont like that line much.
In an aggressive game I'd 3 bet his raise on the flop and see what he does from that point out. You may have been able to get off the hand by pressing him more on the flop... but this guy looks super passive from his line on this hand he wasnt going to come over top of you, even with a set or a boat.
PS. i dont play limit anymore and my advice is likely to be marginal
