This situation comes up really often: I get dealt a premium pair, I raise, I don't get anybody to fold - even with the full bet being 3 times as high as the bring in -, I don't improve - and don't know what to do. So, how should I play a hand like this?
Thank you.

Hands like this are so typical, I hate them.
I think I'd probably bet 6th when the open TT checks but I'm stubborn with big pairs in Stud.
6th and 7th getting checked around are a good result anyway. Hope you won. |

I too have been runiing into this type of situation.
In a hand this afternoon I bet until 5th st then checked it down.
I had a hand like , Of course I raised to start the betting when it got to me.
Sometimes thoe if it is a good enough drawing hand with a big pair I like to bet minimum to get more action.
I would like to know if you think that is a bad move on my part?
Also the hand I had ace's on and checked down from 5th st I won.
So maybe I missed some value bets on that particular hand.
I have been playing stud all week and I am up $100 on the 25c 50c stud tables.
Stud seems to be a eazzy game for me but maybe it is just a upswing. |

I've got to bet on 6th street. You might have the best hand. Not likely but he may have two high diamonds or he may have started with a low 3 straight and made a gut shot on 4th. Who knows? You want to fold out the players who can't beat TT and yet suck out on the river, either hitting two pair, trips or a gutshot for instance. You have a flush draw too. You've got 6 clubs, one King, one non club 5 and three 3s. And you've seen a lot of cards: 22 in all if I've counted right. You've got a real shot here.
What is the TT guy doing by not betting? That is a very weak play. He may actually only have TT.
Tricky game this stud. That's one reason why I don't play it any more. All those cards to remember. Can drive you crazy.
When I played stud full time I learned you have to be very stubborn with a premium pair. There are times to fold it, but usually not when everyone is being passive. And rarely heads up.
Good luck!

I think 6th is a betting street if for no other reason than to earn a 7th street check down if you don't improve to trips or kings up.
No one else's hand looks particularly threatening from a straight or flush perspective. A lot of players are holding each others outs to bigger hands so you might be good here but against that many opponents, someone might have 2 small pair but are afraid themselves and are willing to check it down. |

Reading the board gets really hard, when there are so many players still in the hand. I admit I couldn't even tell how many outs to the flush I had exactly, when it was my turn to act.
I think I really have problems to play as aggressive as I should in stud, because I sometimes simply get scared, and I find it much harder to put opponents on a hand than in hold'em.
I actually did win this hand without improving, though I was convinced I was behind on 6th street.
Thanks everyone for their analysis and comments. |
