Hi folks, I've only been playing stud for a couple of weeks, and my opponent called me a donk for check 4th and reraising 5th. What do you think?
Heres the hand.

Seat 1: $90.70

Seat 4: $40.45
Seat 5: $14
Seat 6: $20.04
Seat 7: $37.75
Seat 8: $108.40

I was chastised for not betting out here, but whats the point of giving seats six and eight odds to draw to his flush when I can charge him more on fifth? Good thinking?

5th Street - (3.25 BB)

Seat 8: xx xx 7Spade: KSpade: 3Diamond:___checks___calls

I reraised here because I felt that I may actually have the best hand here, and that I was now able to force my drawing opponents into making an unprofitable call, but seat 1 (A good player from what i've seen in the last two weeks) berated me for my play here as well. What do you think.

If you are against 3 players and there is an (unlikely) draw to the flush surely you have to bet here to see where you stand. Seat 8 hit a King, so you need to see where you are in relation to that.

Think about it. If someone is flush drawing they will call you with 3 cards to come - I havent seen many give up before 5th street with a good draw. You are giving them a free card by checking. You need to bet here to at the very least eliminate the other guys. That is my thinking anyway.

With all due respect I'm not sure how many players at these levels think about odds anyway. I've played $2/$4 in the past and had seen people call all the way to 7th street with just a pair when their opponent has a higher pair already exposed!!!

There could be other reasons why you were called a donk. Because you beat them with a three runner flush could be one reason. If they won the hand they probably wouldn't comment. To be fair though, they are right in saying you shouldn't have checked on 4th street. Check raising is a dangerous play on 5th street because if everyone else checks you have gave them two free cards.

I agree that a bet was called for on 4th. I think you need to charge the draw. That being said, checking gives you a nice result in that you got to raise on 5th.

I think you're a little lucky... you raised pocket Q's with a dead Q and a door Ace ahead of you. You're vulnerable in this hand. But that doesn't make it a poorly played hand, since you were never put in a position where a fold was the right move. NH.
