Party Poker Rating Breakdown

(Click for full rating of each of criteria)
Party Poker Software

Party Poker's software is graphically standard. Their basic table layout is standard green felt, wood trimmed in appearance. Players are represented as avatars and placards sitting upon reddish chairs on a tan carpet. There are a number of table modifications that can be found on the internet, allowing players to replace the rather bland default graphics with those of their choosing and eliminating the avatars altogether.

Party Poker has re-sizable tables, allowing players to fit many more tables on their monitor without overlap.

The software interface is very good, with very few bugs. The note-taking function is auto-wrapping and saves on the user's harddrive, but there is a maximum character hindrance for each player's notes. The statistics screen has a lot of information, but in ITH's experience has a flaw with regard to how they tabulate winning percentages. Players can toggle 4-color deck and can change the cardbacks themselves.

The main menus are easily navigated. Unfortunately, the cash game menus do not display "players seeing the flop" percentages, making table selection problematic. The menus are easily filterable providing the player an opportunity to quickly find any item he/she is looking for.

Overall, Party Poker's software is decent.

Party Poker Traffic

Party Poker's stance on disallowing players from the United States from playing at the poker site has severely impacted their player traffic. Although they are still a large traffic site, they no longer are the largest site on the internet. Party Poker is attempting to expand their player base by targetting Europe and Southeast Asia.

There are two types of time-based tournaments:
Fixed-length tournaments which end after a specific period of time, and random-length tournaments which may end earlier, by up to 10% of the remaining playing time. All time-based tournaments will end after a complete hand has been played, rather than stopping mid-hand.

    Bad Beat Jackpot

Party Poker offers a Bad Beat Jackpot
Bad Beat Jackpots will be paid out on the real money Hold'em games available titled 'Jackpot' under the Cash Games tabs. Four or more players must be dealt into the hand. Players sitting out do not qualify for the jackpot. Party Poker will take $0.50 each raked pot ($5.00 pot minimum) as a Bad Beat Jackpot rake. A jackpot is hit when a player with four 8s or better is beaten. The best hands of both the winner and the loser must include their hole cards, and the hand must go to a showdown. 50% of the amount will go to the loser of the hand (the bad beat), 25% to the winner, and 25% will be split between the other seated players who actively participated in the hand.

Piscivorous Discretionary Poker Room Bonus Rating

Party Poker has completely re-tooled the way players can clear bonuses there. Player need to earn 4 Party Points for each bonus dollar. Players earn, for instance, 3.5 Party Points for each 20 raked hands at $1/$2 fixed limit. A base Jack-level player, therefore, would need to play in 23 raked hands in order to clear $1 in bonus. This, on the surface, makes this slightly less than a 23x bonus if playing these stakes. Indeed it is for those players who decide to hit and run Party bonuses. For the players who play consistently at Party, however, the bonuses here can be quite lucrative, even at the $0.50/$1 limit. Each level above the entry level Jack status, the earnrate increases. So if you manage to attain Queen level, your raked hands neede drop by half to around 11x. Keep going and ultimately an Ace level player can get 14 Party Points for 20 raked hands, effectively clearing $3.50 every 20 raked hands. This is between 5 and 6x raked hand requirements. A step further into the $2/$4 fixed limit and a player could earn 44 Party Points for every 20 raked hands ace an Ace level player. That's $11 for every 20 raked hands. Put another way, that's a 1.8x raked hand requirement. Although the bonus doesn't clear as well at the micro-limits as it once did, or even the $1/$2 limit, the fact of the matter is that Party Poker has initiated a player program for bonuses that reward their loyal players, but that also doesn't shut out those players who play there sporadically looking for the best bonuses. In my heyday as a Party-only player, I would have enjoyed a player VIP program like they offer now. My bonuses would have cleared faster and I would have accrued more Party Points quicker. Party Poker does have one glaring deficiency. They don't reward their players with Party Points for tournament and SnG play. In my opinion, this could easily be remedied.
