Hi all.
It was great meeting some of you at the convention this summer. I think that vegas trip may mark the end of poker for me for a while though.
Over the last year, I tried putting together a bankroll to be able to go pro when I graduate next may. During that time, I have worked on my game, played in many tough and short handed LHE situations, and I think I have improved significantly. I htink though, that ewhat I learned most during that time was that I did not want to grind away a living on line.
My 11 days in vegas last month were tremendous fun. I had a great time, and was one of the regulars at the #1 table at the mirage that week keeping the game fun, and keeping the tourists at the table. I was surprised how little tipping it took to be treated so well. It was a great time, but after leaving vegas, I slowly came to the realization that I don;t want to do that for a living either. It would be way more work than it is worth. My physical tells are horrible, and I'd need to step uyp my game to play at least 30/60 or higher to make a go at it live. Poker for me will remain a hobby.
Also this summer, I was away on an internship related to my major. I had an increadible summer, and it was during this period that it hit me. Much like Mike McDermott's defining moment in Rounders where he realizes he need to be a poker player and not a Lawyer, I realized I am a psychometrician and not a poker player.
As a result of these things, I am goign to be spending the next 9 months working on my dissertation, doing research, and getting the hell out of graduate school, and finding a job. I will not be playing much if any poker during that time. And since I won't be playing, I probably won't be coming around here much either.
This is the best community I have ever found on-line, and I am proud to have been in on it since near the beginning, but for at least a little while, I will be taking my leave.
I am absolutely sure I will be back eventually, as I am sure this place will gcontinue to grow and prosper.
So until I return, farewell to all of you who make this place great, and who have helped me become a better player.
Like BD, I am walking away now a significant winner with a functional bankroll, but will be blowing that bankroll in the short term on finishing this degree. If and when I come back to the game, I'll be earning enough to replenish it easily with my salary.
it has been a bittersweet few week coming to this realization. The sadness of walking away from the game, and the excitement of walking into the future of my new career.
Best wishes to all, and may all your decisions be +EV,
rob

Columbus discovered the New World
Jonas Salk discovered the Polio vaccine
Einstein discovered that matter could be converted to energy
but they were all dwarfed when RobRobRob discovered the phenomenal Texas Holdem Power of the 53o.
Your legacy at ITH is assured.
Good Luck with your future career. Don't be a stranger. |

It was great meeting you and I'm sorry to see you go. Good luck in your future endeavors. FWIW I think you're making the correct decision. Going pro isn't an "easy" life. And you'll still have that option in the future if it's really in the cards for you.
We'll see you when you get back and fill us in on what's been going on. Just make sure that you do come back.! |

Conquering the tables weren't enough, now you need to conquer the world too?
I can't help but thinking 3Rob and BD might be the next Andy Beal's, only better
Best of luck to you Rob, not that you need it. Stay in touch!

| All the old guard is escaping! I learned a lot from you, both from your posts and the conference calls. I'm glad you don't charge royalties. I'm sure you will be a success in your chosen field and hope that one day I understand what your chosen field is. I wish you the very best of luck and hope that we see you here periodically to keep us updated on your progress through the academic and work worlds. |

I am glad you made it to the convention before you came to this decision. I was pleased to meet you even though I was only there for an evening.
Long breaks are good for the psyche. I had a fantastic run after a long break, so I hope your eventual return is as rewarding. Enjoy life without the distraction of poker.
I still recall when legaleagle introduced me to the forum, he told me it was basically you and him posting, so I should try to keep up. I do not think I was up to your par, but I gave it a run.
Be well, you big stud you! |
