Playing a Sit-n-go tournament for the first time, so I think I might post a couple of hands while I try to figure out the correct strategies for this type of game. It is a £5, 10 handed cryptologic game.

Second hand in, I get dealt a pair of queen in late position.

Two mid position players call the 15 blinds, I raise to 100. Blinds fold and the two mid position players call.

Flop comes A 10 5. First player checks and the second bets 185 into a 322 pot. I fold my queens.

Is this cautious strategy the way to go in the early parts of a sit-n-go?

I fold also. It's 3 way so he shouldn't be fooling around. Plus it's early. Prudent fold.

You'd need a good read on villain being a moron to continue here. Seems like that bet is normally a middling ace testing to see if it's best, but of course having done that villain then never folds when you represent a better ace.

Short answer: yes. Tight early is the way to go in STTs. What will determine your success is your ability to get aggressive in the middle and your knowledge of appropriate pushing spots when you get short.

Agreed. Couldn't have put it better myself.

Thanks. It is worth noting that middle aggression and pushing ranges determine success in large part because those are the areas that can't be easily learned from picking up a book. The "tight early" mantra in SnGs is so highly "publicized" in the literature and on the internet that any donk can adopt the strategy and survive the first few levels of a SnG. It's after that point that the typical donk gets completely lost.

Here are two hands I played recently. I would appreciate peoples' thoughts.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blinds 25-50, I have JJ on the button and 1700 chips. MP is fairly tight/aggressive.

MP (2700 chips) raises to 150 and I raise to 450. UTG+1 calls and all other players fold.

Flop: Qc Qs 10s

MP bets out 400 and I raise all in. Mp folds

My thinking was that he was likely to have reraised preflop with aces or kings and he is likely to have checked and trapped with trip queens. Should I have folded preflop to avoid a large pot?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another hand is heads up - blinds are 500/1000. My opponent has been either pushing or folding and has just lost a large pot.

I have 10c7c on the big blind. My opponent raises all-in for a total of 3100. Should I call? I have to pay 2100 to win 4100 so I am getting just under 2-1 odds. The only hand I have to be really scared about is a higher pocket pair or a hand that dominates me like K10, A7 etc.. I am about even money with a low pocket pair, 3-2 dog against hands like Ax or 2-1 dog against two high cards. There is also the chance he is pushing with any two. I called and lost to A8 and went on to lose the tournament.

I suggest you start a new thread jor threads with these new hands. You'll get more comment probably if you post one hand per post.

MP has a hand worth leading into a re-raiser on the flop, yet folds when getting fairly decent odds to call. Odd play. on his part.
