Troy Headrick, aka BernardDogs
Meet Parenting magazine's choice for Father Tip of the Year award...gambling for allowances!

Name Troy Headrick

Age I’ll be 37 in March.

Where are you from?
I grew up in Wisconsin, United States. I’ve lived in Burlington, Vermont for 8 years and will hopefully spend the rest of my life here (when I’m not traveling to Atlantic City).

Are you married? Children?
I’m divorced but am fortunate to have found a second chance with my life partner – as well as an amazing dance partner. We’ll be married in October of this year. I have two daughters from my first marriage. They’re 10 and 8 years old and can each hold their own at my home game. Sometimes we wager for other than allowances – I’m currently making my 8-year-old’s bed for a week.

What do you do for a living?
I’m a Training Specialist for the Human Resources department of my city. I also instruct Sociology courses at my local Community College.

How long have you been playing Internet poker?
I put $50 into play just over a year ago at Party Poker.

What limits do you play?
I recently started cashing out my bankroll to fund a trip that my partner is taking to Italy. Prior to that, I was playing comfortably at the $5/$10 tables and was thinking about making a move into the $10/$20 tables. I’ve tried a few $200 SNGs, but was mostly dancing between the $50 and $100 SNGs. I’m also cashing out regularly to pay down our mortgage, my student loans, etc. My bankroll is low right now, so you’ll mostly find me on the $10 SNGs. I recently deposited $50 at Poker Stars in order to get into the Forum Tournament and have just moved to the $1/$2 fixed ring tables along with the occasional SNG. As I’ve stated on the forum, I’m a bit more liberal with my bankroll than most players recommend (and I occasionally regret it).

What is your favorite site and why?
I haven’t explored around too much. In fact, I’ve only played at Party Poker and Poker Stars. I’m comfortable with the interface at Party, and have a solid feel for the players there. I think that works to my advantage. I also have met some regulars there that I enjoy playing with. I really like the variety of SNGs offered at Poker Stars, but I tend to be an impatient player. I’m really working on my discipline with their tournaments that are apt to take a bit longer to complete.

What has been your biggest poker thrill or achievement up to now?
I have placed in the money for two of Party Poker’s Weekend Special tournaments. I’m very proud of my final table placement in a recent Friday Special. I finished 8th.

What area of your game are you currently focusing on?
I’ve been working on my no-limit tournament play and have learned some valuable lessons. I’m always working on my discipline and patience, as I have a tendency toward being too aggressive. I’m also trying hard to make the Finals cruise with Party Poker.

If you could go back in time and start all over again on the Internet, what would you do differently?
Although I was very fortunate to start my on-line career with a hot streak, I would have played much more within the limits of my bankroll. I lost just over $2k during my first run of cold cards by not adjusting into lower stake games.

What’s your favorite poker saying or phrase?
“Nice call” (When it’s said TO me, not BY me). It’s just a great feeling to have pulled off the correct read of your opponent.

Who is your favorite poker player (if you have one)?
I like Daniel Negreanu’s willingness to give us a frank look behind the scenes of his career. I respect his honesty and his straightforward telling of the highs and lows of his career thus far. I always respect the players who are willing to serve as mentors to new players who have a commitment to learning. Accordingly, Matthew certainly fits into this category.

What are your other interests outside of poker?
My biggest rewards come from being a solid father to two amazing girls. Men have an obligation to role model behavior that contradicts how we’ve been socialized. Ballroom dancing with my partner. Creating a socially just world. My two Saint Bernards. Distance running. A good beer with good friends.

Feel free to add anything else you would like to say.
I truly appreciate all of the discussion and bantering I’ve experienced thus far on this site. I look forward to meeting as many of you in person as I can.Look Troy up in the Poker Forum!
